Project Description

This assignment has been for a young couple who have recently purchased this charming Victorian worker’s cottage home in the popular Australian coastal town of Warrnambool.
The brief was to transform the currently cramped and convoluted living spaces, made up of past rush additions, into a large open living room and kitchen space for this young family to call home.

Located on a recently subdivided lot, the site is now somewhat restrained and so the focus has been on enhancing the sense of a secluded indoor-outdoor living environment while allowing maximum natural light into the spaces.
Unlike many architectural home alterations publicised in mainstream media, this proposal seeks to complement the existing architectural character, materiality, colours and details while satisfying the clients’ brief for a flexible open plan layout.

The proposal adopts existing house’s soft lavender grey weatherboard cladding and timber lattice detailing throughout mixed with the introduction of a Californian-style open living space featuring raked ceilings, open plan kitchen and small alfresco dining zone.
The bedrooms and bathrooms have also been suitably updated to enhance user comfort and privacy over the existing setup.
Recycled hardwood for the original residence makes itself available throughout the kitchen joinery and selected built-in furniture throughout the house, further cementing a connection between new and old.

This residence is in planning/DA phase and is estimated to begin construction late 2021.
